Penny Commissiong was a former Miss Universe contestant and a pioneering athlete from Trinidad and Tobago. She was born on February 2, 1956, in San Fernando, Trinidad. Commissiong made history as the first woman of African descent to win the Miss Universe title in 1977, breaking racial barriers in the pageant world.
In addition to her exploits in the pageant world, Commissiong was an accomplished athlete, competing primarily in the sport of swimming. She represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games, becoming the first female swimmer to represent the country at the Olympics.
After her pageant and athletic career, Commissiong became involved in politics, serving as a senator for the Trinidad and Tobago government. She also established the Penny Commissiong Aquatic Centre in San Fernando, which was named in her honor.
